If you're reading this post, you've probably heard this term before and, like me, you may even be thinking that such a design feature is an everyday part of the web in 2016.
Sadly, this is not always the case when it comes to online travel booking systems. I have encountered plenty of these systems whilst booking my own holidays in the past, but have never taken note of how many are actually fully device-responsive and therefore provide a good, natural user experience. However, after some initial research here at Quadra HQ, we have found that a surprisingly large number of travel and hospitality businesses don't offer a consistent experience on their website when viewed on mobile.
It is already well known that more than 50% of web traffic comes from mobile devices; another stark figure is that approximately two-thirds of same-day hotel bookings are made via a mobile phone. These points alone tell me that offering a full experience to travel customers across multiple devices is a must if business owners are aiming for a healthy level of online bookings. If we add the fact that more and more users are undertaking their digital journeys across more than one device, businesses are missing out on a big chunk of potential sales if their websites cannot offer a seamless experience - regardless of how and where users are browsing.
We can see how many airlines tackle this by offering a mobile native app which compensates for a potentially more limited experience on their mobile website - some even offer both an app and a good mobile website! Obviously offering a basic yet comprehensive app on mobile is a great idea, but we also know that the investment necessary for creating native apps for both iOS and Android is very high.
With this in mind, and considering increased processing power and improved mobile browser functionality, a good responsive website is all that many travel businesses need to guarantee a surge in direct conversions from mobile devices.
We have already helped one of our clients overcome this very challenge, creating a fully-responsive website and mobile-responsive booking system for Ski Cuisine, a catered chalet company operating in the French Alps. You can find out more about how we developed this website in our case study.
